Course Description

Consolidates numerical, algebraic and statistical skills for business contexts — percentages and mark-ups, break-even formulae, and interpreting data through mean, median, mode and simple charts.

Course Objectives

To build the numerical fluency and problem-solving skills required for undergraduate business study.

Key Topics

  1. Fractions, decimals and percentages
  2. Percentage change (mark-up, discount)
  3. Business formulae and break-even analysis
  4. Rearranging formulae to solve for an unknown
  5. Mean, median and mode
  6. Interpreting bar, pie and line charts

Course Outline (selected teaching weeks, Semester 1)

WeekTopic & Activity
2Number & Percentages
AC1.1 Perform calculations involving fractions, decimals and percentages. AC1.2 Apply percentage change to business scenarios (mark-up, discount).
Lecture & Workbook: Percentages in Retail Pricing.
5Algebra & Formulae
AC2.1 Substitute values into simple business formulae (e.g. break-even). AC2.2 Rearrange formulae to solve for an unknown.

7Formative Assessment
Midterm assessment: draft assignment reviewed with tutor feedback.
1-to-1 feedback sessions with tutors.
9Data & Statistics
AC3.1 Calculate mean, median and mode from a business dataset. AC3.2 Interpret simple charts and tables (bar, pie, line).
Workshop: Interpreting Sales Data in Excel.
Final exam weekFinal Assessment Submission
Final submission of all units of the semester.
Portfolio finalisation and semester review.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Perform calculations with fractions, decimals and percentages and apply them to business scenarios.
  2. Substitute into and rearrange simple business formulae, including break-even analysis.
  3. Calculate mean, median and mode, and interpret simple charts and tables of business data.
Assessment

Assessed by coursework (no written examination) — an assignment, report or presentation set at the start of Semester 1. A formative draft is reviewed with tutor feedback as the unit’s midterm assessment during the teaching weeks, and the final version is submitted in the final exam week at the end of the semester. Graded Pass, Merit or Distinction, with plagiarism-checked submissions (Turnitin) and a signed Learner Declaration Form.
